One cannot say that this remake is "unnecessary" unless one has seen it, unfortunately. The Swedish film left out big bits of a 550-page novel, which I thought were significant for the story. An alternative translation/screenplay might be better in that respect - one has to suck it and see.

On the other hand, the female lead presents problems. In the novels, she is young, intelligent and feral. Apart from the age-old dilemma of either being young enough to look the part or having sufficient top-class acting experience to play it satisfactorily, there is the added aspect that the leading female in these novels has a persona which "name" actresses, mindful of their "careers" and status within the celebrity gossip-columns, might not wish to embrace. Having said which, Noomi Rapace is superb in the part, and one cannot see anyone doing better. This is not much to do with being Swedish in a Swedish-language original, Ms Rapace is a fine actor full-stop. It is similar to Sofie Gråbøl in "The Killing" - there is no obvious native English-speaking actor who could put over that part as-written in a British/American television drama.

I will go and see this film, if only out of curiosity.
