It is very harsh to say that teachers are dumb and exams are easy - neither statemens are true and you demean both the profession and our children. The exams are different to exams we took, that is certain. They examine different skills. The present situation is caused by the government's ridiculous targets encouraging exam boards to become commercialised, and therefore competitive, and the prescriptive, overburdened, national curriculum which is so bloated that there is hardly enough time for in-depth teaching of anything. Compare this to the O-level syllabus, if you are interested. Teachers generally were not at all in favour of the introduction of the GCSE but had very little option other than to accept it - the government was warned what could happen, particularly if the promised "other routes" option was not fulfilled.
Do we know how many teachers actually attended these seminars? Whether each exam board runs them in the same way as we are led to believe in the articles.
I don't condone for one minute any exam board telling teachers the content of any exam. Something needs to be done, and urgently. Teachers and pupils should not bear the brunt of these "findings" - the government should scrap it's blanket 5 A-C's target and make sure that there are opportunities for all children via different routes - not just pay lip service to it.
